Biography

George Scofield is a partner in the San Antonio office and a member of the US Management Committee.

George has a general tax, health care and business practice. He has extensive experience in:

  • Public charity and private foundation tax compliance and charitable giving
  • Internal tax compliance reviews and audits
  • IRS Audits, appeals and closing agreements
  • Federal, state and local tax matters
  • Multi-hospital joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, joint operating agreements and other affiliations
  • Hospital and physician joint ventures, integrated delivery systems networks, acquisition of physician practices and other physician/hospital affiliations
  • Whole-hospital joint ventures 
  • Partnerships, limited liability companies, mergers and acquisitions, tax-exempt organizations and S corporations
  • Sophisticated executive incentive compensation planning


George has participated in all facets of tax analysis associated with tax-exempt bond financings for:

  • Tax-exempt organizations (including hospitals, colleges and universities)
  • Political subdivisions (including colleges, cities, counties and school districts)
  • Conduit borrowers (including airports, single-family housing and manufacturers)
  • Municipal utility financing (including electric, gas, water and sewage)

He has also successfully handled IRS audits of tax-exempt organizations and tax-exempt bonds on behalf of numerous clients. Other projects he has worked on include arbitrage, rebate, advanced and current refundings, yield restrictions and calculations, private business use tests, airport exempt financings, special revenue and exempt facilities financing, tax and revenue anticipation notes, commercial paper and other variable rate financing, forward purchase and other innovative financing techniques designed to meet the objectives of the issuer and applicable federal income tax restrictions.
