Tom Meaney joined the Dallas office as an associate in 1999 and became senior counsel in 2008. Tom is a transactional intellectual property specialist with a primary focus on patent preparation and prosecution, portfolio management, technology licensing and cloud services. Tom is a registered patent attorney with a B.S.E.E. and has extensive experience both supervising a team of IP professionals and actively engaging in a large volume of patent prosecution before the US and international patent offices. Tom's technical experience covers a diverse range of technologies, including next generation 5G wireless technologies, mobile devices, medical devices, computer and software-related technologies, and more. On the corporate and business side, Tom is a seasoned negotiator in domestic and international IP transactions, including mergers & acquisitions, technology licensing and cloud services.

Prior to joining the firm, Tom was a successful trial and appellate lawyer for the Texas Attorney General's Office providing litigation and appellate representation of multiple Texas state agencies in the area of state taxation. Tom first-chaired multiple hearings, trials, and appeals in state and federal trial and appellate courts.

  • Management of large patent portfolio, prosecution, and harvesting for large San Diego-based communications company
  • Lead IP negotiations for a New York Stock Exchange company in a complex spin-off of a foreign subsidiary
  • Lead negotiations and drafting for European deployment of cloud-based gaming system for a New York Stock Exchange company
  • Successful development and implementation of a patent harvesting program for a large San Francisco-based software company leading to a substantial increase of patent filings during the first 3 years of the program
  • Lead IP due diligence in a proposed acquisition of a medium-sized software company
  • Represented a Palo Alto-based computer company in negotiations against a notorious telecommunications non-practicing entity
  • Lead IP negotiations and due diligence for a New York Stock Exchange company in a $50M+ joint venture involving complex licensing of a 200+ patent portfolio
  • Lead IP negotiations for a New York Stock Exchange company in a lifeline investment deal involving technology use and licensing
  • Lead negotiations in numerous licensing and IP-related issues including embedded software licenses, branding agreements, shrinkwrap licenses/EULAs, copyright and trademark licenses, OEM licenses, non-disclosure agreements, technical employee agreements, and the like
