Megan King

Biography

Megan King is a pro bono lawyer based in Melbourne, working across the national pro bono practice with a focus on law reform, human rights, financial abuse, modern slavery and mental health.

Early in her career Megan worked in commercial litigation, where she developed an interest in human rights and pro bono practice. Megan has over a decade's worth of experience in the access to justice sector and is experienced in advising community legal centres on organisational risk, advocacy strategies and law reform.

As part of her practice, Megan undertakes work:

  • representing individuals who have experienced financial abuse, discrimination and modern slavery;
  • designing and delivering projects for community legal centres and non-profit organisations;  and
  • drafting submissions and reports for human rights organisations.

Key pieces of work that Megan has led include:

  • In partnership with Thirrili, an Indigenous post-vention suicide non-profit, creating a culturally appropriate toolkit for First Nations people engaging with the coronial system during times of sorry business, to ensure their voices are heard. The toolkit is a ‘living’ resource, updated in consultation with Thirrili staff and clients.
  • Successfully representing a refugee from the NZYQ cohort in the High Court, ultimately resulting in our client’s visa cancellation being remitted to the Minister for re-decision.
  • Representing individuals in racial and disability discrimination matters at the Australian Human Rights Commission, encouraging improved policies and procedures that do not negatively impact First Nations communities or people with disability.
  • Partnering with Consumer Credit Legal Service WA to design and deliver advocacy strategies to bring about legislative and systems changes, including hosting two financial abuse roundtables.
  • Partnering with Marninwarntikura Women's Resource Centre and spending time on Country with their staff to help strengthen the foundations of their Family Safety Legal Unit to ensure that it aligns with the unique confidentiality, cultural, and structural requirements of a trauma-informed, community-led service.
