Norton Rose Fulbright advises on largest UK energy storage portfolio transaction for a single technology provider to date

Mondial Business July 23, 2018

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised Fluence after it was selected by UK Power Reserve (UKPR) to deliver half of its battery storage portfolio. This is the firm’s first engagement with Fluence, a global energy storage technology and services provider, jointly owned by Siemens and AES.

Fluence will deliver 60MW of large scale battery-based energy storage across three projects in Bolton, Melton Mowbray and Warrington, with 20MW of storage being provided to each site. The deal represents Fluence’s first project in the UK as a joint venture, though its team has delivered several projects in the UK previously as part of both Siemens and AES Energy Storage. UKPR will utilise Fluence’s Advancion energy storage platform, being deployed in this instance using one-hour duration batteries from LG Chem.

The firm advised Fluence on all aspects of the construction contracts and long term servicing contracts for the three projects.

The construction of the 60MW deal is part of UKPR’s 120MW battery storage portfolio, as secured in the 2016 Capacity Market auction. All three sites are expected to be operational during winter 2018/19.

The Norton Rose Fulbright team was led by Jim Jordan, of counsel in the London office.
