Simon Meagher

Special Counsel, Corporate M&A – Perth

Simon Meagher is a special counsel in the firm's corporate M&A team. Based in Perth, he has been with Norton Rose Fulbright since 2014. We caught up with Simon to find out more about the corporate M&A team, the support he receives from partners, and the global nature of his work.

How would you describe working in the Corporate M&A team at NRF?

We all know that working in a law firm is demanding, but the corporate M&A team genuinely has fun along the way so if I had to use one word to sum it up, I would say entertaining! I mean that semi-ironically in relation to the volume of work we have on at the moment, but law-nerd serious in the context of how good the deals are and how sophisticated our clients are.

The Corporate M&A team genuinely has fun along the way.

We have a very broad practice, with core expertise in private and public M&A and ECM work, but with specialised experience across the team in oil and gas, energy more broadly, mining and construction.

The Corporate M&A team in Perth is led by David Jewkes and Adam Edelman. How would you describe their leadership styles?

Both David and Adam are great guys to work with.  They know their stuff but they’re relaxed and easy to get along with. They always kick in to help with the workload and make sure everyone is part of an inclusive team – they’ll be working hard when everyone else is and are quick to show their appreciation. They are also understanding of the various other things going on in your life, so are really supportive of flexible working when you need it.

One of the key features of Norton Rose Fulbright is that it is a truly globally integrated firm.  Have you experienced this in your role and if so, how has it manifested?

I’m constantly referring work to, and receiving work from, colleagues in other offices. The matter I’ve just taken a break from involves our London, Tokyo and Sao Paulo offices. It makes scheduling conference calls tough, but everyone is genuinely working to provide the client with a consistent, seamless work product.

It’s great to know you can rely on cooperation and the highest standards from your colleagues wherever they’re located.

Our offices work together to ensure clients have a quality ‘single firm’ experience – it’s great to know you can rely on cooperation and the highest standards from your colleagues wherever they’re located.

On a more personal level, Norton Rose Fulbright’s international academy career development program has allowed me to improve my network within the firm, both across Australia and internationally.

What do you enjoy about working at Norton Rose Fulbright?

The people are great value. We have a close, growing team, so I get to work with a different combination of people on almost all of my matters. We take our work seriously, but we don’t take ourselves seriously, so everyone gets to be themselves at work and we like to see the funny side of things. Another reason for describing work as entertaining!
