Norton Rose Fulbright to add corporate partner in Sydney for Asia-Pacific cross-border practice

Global People September 11, 2017

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright today announced that experienced energy and resources lawyer Shamim Razavi will join as a corporate and M&A partner in the Sydney office.

Mr Razavi has extensive experience advising foreign investors in the Asia-Pacific region, across the financial services, technology and energy industries, with a particular focus on oil and gas. He will soon relocate to Sydney from Jakarta, where he currently works for our Indonesian associate firm TNB & Partners, with a focus on cross-border transactions involving ASEAN countries, Korea and Japan.

He has advised on some of the largest and highest profile deals in the Asia Pacific market in recent years, including PTTEP acquisition of Natuna Sea Block A, JX Nippon Oil and Energy’s significant infrastructure investments and significant regional investments by leading Australian banks and insurers.

Mr Razavi’s hallmark is navigating the regulatory and cultural hazards of investment in emerging markets in a way that minimises clients’ risk exposure while getting the deal done. His clients include major banks and insurance companies, technology enterprises, private equity houses, hedge funds, energy production interests and offtakers and his move underlines our firm’s global offering.

His appointment follows the recent announcement of three new corporate partners – Martin Irwin (Sydney), Adam Edelman (joining in Perth on September 11) and Jasmine Sprange (joining in Sydney in October) – as well as incoming special counsel Paul O’Donnell in the Sydney tax team (joining in Sydney in October).

Norton Rose Fulbright managing partner in Australia Wayne Spanner commented:

"Shamim has a very strong reputation as a corporate and M&A lawyer in the Asia-Pacific region, with deep industry connections right across energy, financial institutions and technology. Our busy Australian energy team, led by our Sydney-based global head of energy Simon Currie, has a tremendous track record in both fossil fuel and emerging renewable projects in Australia and the region. We expect that the addition of Shamim will only enhance our offering to clients in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and beyond."

Mr Razavi commented:

"Having spent years understanding the way corporate clients do business in the Asia-Pacific, I’m thrilled to be joining the experienced energy, financial institutions, technology and corporate teams in Australia. Our clients increasingly operate in a seamless Asian environment and in my new role I will continue to deliver the targeted, commercial and connected results those clients demand."
