Publication May 2018

Welcome to the May 2018 edition of Legalseas.

In this edition, we consider the risks of modern slavery in maritime supply chains, as jurisdictions including Australia and Hong Kong seek to introduce reporting requirements comparable to the UK Modern Slavery Act.

The new European Regulation on ship recycling comes into effect on 31 December 2018, and follows the first criminal prosecution of a shipowner, Seatrade, for breaching existing regulations. We consider the implications for shipowners.

As implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) edges closer, our GDPR checklist is designed to give an illustrative overview of the requirements likely to impact shipowners, and the practical steps that organisations need to take to meet those requirements.

We conclude this edition with a video highlighting trends in cyber-attacks in the shipping industry and recent legal and regulatory changes relating to cyber risk.
