Norton Rose Fulbright named Planning Law Firm of the Year

Global Recognition July 1, 2017

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has been awarded “Law Firm of the Year” at the prestigious Planning and Placemaking Awards 2017, held last night June 21 by leading industry publication, Planning Magazine.

The award recognises the team's work advising London City Airport on the successful planning appeal and compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) for its £344m expansion project, the City Airport Development Programme (CADP). CADP will deliver a passenger terminal extension, additional aircraft stands and a full length parallel taxiway over King George V Dock. The expansion will allow City Airport to accommodate a new generation of larger, more fuel efficient and quieter aircraft, meet the demand for more aircraft movements on the runway in peak hours, and, handle growing numbers of passengers. It will also host significant socio-economic benefits through the creation of 1,600 airport and 500 construction jobs.

The judges praised Norton Rose Fulbright’s "level of complex legal work" in a "very challenging political context".

Duncan Field, head of planning, UK and lead partner on the matter, commented:

"This was an extremely complex project with various obstacles to overcome and I am delighted that the hard work of all those involved has been recognised by this award."

The Norton Rose Fulbright team advising City Airport included Victoria Watson and Sarah Bischoff in the planning team. They were assisted by Katherine Forster, Jemima Grimshaw and Kinga Metkowski, and supported by real estate partner Neil Biswas and associate Paul Matthews.

The firm also won "Property Team of the Year” at the British Legal Awards 2016 for their work on the same deal.
