Farmida Bi and Jonathan Herbst recognised in Financial News' Fifty Most Influential Lawyers

United Kingdom Press release - People May 2023

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright’s Farmida Bi CBE and Jonathan Herbst have been included in Financial News’ Fifty Most Influential Lawyers 2023 list.

The list, which is in its third year, celebrates outstanding leaders in management roles at top-tier firms or practices, as well as executives advising on large and/or innovative mergers and acquisitions, private equity deals, IPOs, equity and debt capital markets transactions, regulation and employment law.

The recognition celebrates Farmida, a “well-known debt capital markets and Islamic finance lawyer”, for her leadership as the firm’s EMEA chair since May 2018 and for her work on high-profile deals, including advising Pakistan’s Ministry of Finance on bond issuances. The outlet notes that she led Norton Rose Fulbright’s pledge last year to recognise UK legal apprenticeships as a pathway into law, as well as references her position as chair of trustees for the Barbican Centre Trust and for the Patchwork Foundation, which promotes engagement in politics and civil society for disadvantaged young people.

Farmida featured in Financial News’ Fifty Most Influential Lawyers 2021 and 2022 lists, and has appeared four consecutive times in its 100 Most Influential Women in European Finance list. She is also recognised in Chambers’ Spotlight category for Banking and Finance: Islamic Finance and The Legal 500's Hall of Fame for Islamic finance.

Jonathan, who is the firm’s global head of finance services regulation, was recognised for his role - following the UK’s exit from the EU - advising ABN Amro and Société Générale in relation to their reauthorisation as third-country branches in the UK, as well as advising the London Stock Exchange Group in relation to its post-Brexit market structuring plans. Also highlighted are his position as chair of the Future Regulation Group of the International Regulatory Strategy Group, a joint venture between TheCityUK and the City of London Corporation to shape the development of a global regulatory framework for financial services, and his involvement in a Law Society sub-committee that focuses on financial services and the FCA’s Lawyers Consultative Group.

This is the second time that Jonathan has featured in Financial News’ Fifty Most Influential Lawyers list. He is also ranked Band 1 in Chambers, where he is noted for providing “first-class advice and support", and is recognised in The Legal 500's Hall of Fame for Financial Services: Non-Contentious/Regulatory.
