Biography

A rigorous strategic litigation lawyer, Virginie Blanchette-Séguin represents Crown corporations, municipalities, large businesses and financial institutions before federal and Quebec courts. Her practice focuses mainly on class actions, conflicts between shareholders, complex public, environmental and civil and criminal liability disputes.

Virginie clerked for Justice Clément Gascon at the Supreme Court of Canada during the 2017‑2018 judicial year, and for Justice Marc Nadon at the Federal Court of Appeal during the 2015-2016 judicial year.

  • A Canadian bank, in a class action involving fee disclosure to clients, notably under the Consumer Protection Act
  • A health technology company, as part of a class action based on the Health Insurance Act
  • A large municipality, in two class actions regarding police liability in the context of massive demonstrations
  • Two municipalities, in a class action for racial profiling
  • An on-line food order and delivery service, in a class action regarding commissions charged to restaurateurs

Public law

  • Air carriers, in a matter before the Federal Court of Appeal and before the Supreme Court of Canada respecting the application of the Montreal Convention, an international treaty
  • An insurer, in a third-party claim following the settlement of a class action against school boards for fees charged in breach of the Education Act
  • A large mining corporation, defending it against criminal and penal charges for alleged violations of the Fisheries Act and the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations
