Biography

Stephen Vincent is a Calgary-based lawyer practising both employment and labour law as well as civil litigation. In the employment and labour context, Stephen advises employers regarding hiring employees at all levels, negotiating executive employment contracts, assisting with various components of labour relations and related disputes, while also assisting in the defence and resolution of wrongful and unjust dismissal claims before various courts and tribunals.

Stephen also practises in corporate and commercial litigation, assisting clients with matters pertaining to contractual disputes, construction, oil and gas, insurance, mediation, and many others. He is also a member of NRFC's national regulatory and investigations team, assisting with investigations and defences for clients navigating international civil, criminal and regulatory risks primarily in the transportation space.

Stephen joined us as a summer student in 2017 and completed his articles with us in 2020.

Prior to law school, Stephen worked as a professional musician, touring and performing extensively throughout Canada and the United States.

During his time in law school, Stephen volunteered with Student Legal Assistance at the University of Calgary, providing free legal assistance to low-income Albertans. Stephen also represented the University of Calgary at the 2018 Alberta Court of Appeal competitive moot in the civil law category.

Stephen has acted in the following matters:

  • Assisting counsel representing Chance Oil and Gas Limited in litigation against the Yukon government regarding a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing that was implemented in 2015. The claim alleges misrepresentation and that Yukon improperly and arbitrarily imposed a non-legislated moratorium while failing to compensate Chance for effectively cancelling its rights held under multiple oil and gas dispositions.  Chance is claiming damages in the amount $395 million for its expended costs and stranded capital investment, plus an additional $1.83 billion for its loss of opportunity.
  • Member of the NRFC team representing an international manufacturer in ongoing and independent investigations by multiple national justice departments regarding allegations of intermediaries and government officials engaging in corruption and money laundering within the asset procurement process. NRFC is leading the internal investigation, document review, and interviews and is providing strategic and legal advice to the company and updating its audit committee. 
  • Co-counsel to Canadian airline with respect to application for certification by union and collective bargaining for first collective agreement.
