Sandy Lockhart

Biography

Sandy Lockhart is a litigator whose practice centers on complex commercial disputes and fast-moving crises.

Sandy has acted on half-billion-dollar insolvency claims, multi-hundred-million-dollar shareholder disputes, class actions, corporate governance disputes, internal investigations, and major professional negligence claims, to name just a few. Beyond commercial litigation, his work has included preparing executives to testify at parliamentary hearings, prosecuting and defending criminal and regulatory matters, and advising clients on how to prepare for, or respond to, summonses and warrants.

Sandy joined the firm from Canada’s leading high-stakes public strategy and communications firm. Before that, he was with one of Toronto's leading litigation boutiques. He graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2016, where he was the silver medalist. Sandy clerked for the Court of Appeal for British Columbia.

Sandy advised on the following matters:

  • Canadian Senate and House of Commons investigations, where he has prepared executives to testify.
  • A judicial review that successfully overturned the exclusion of a client from a government program (2018 ONSC 5062).
  • A lease dispute caused when multinational quick service chain terminated many of its leases before their expiration.
  • The execution of an Anton Piller order, where he acted as Independent Supervising Solicitor overseeing its execution.
  • The then second largest auditor’s negligence claim in Canadian history.
  • Overturning a novel procedural order that purported to limit the Chief Adjudicator for the Indian Residential Schools Settlement’s ability to execute his function.
  • A $100 million class action where he obtained a dismissal at a preliminary stage.
