Biography

Madeline Inzenga is a disputes associate based in our Houston office. She is a member of the Commercial and Energy Disputes team. Her practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, arbitration and risk advisory services related to energy, shipping and construction.

Madeline has represented energy companies, construction companies, chemical plants, vessel owners, port authorities, contractors and charterers in energy and shipping litigation matters. She has experience in all phases of litigation, from pre-suit investigation, discovery, depositions, trial preparation, negotiation, trials and appeal. She has first-chaired hearings and taken and defended multiple depositions. She regularly drafts and assists with drafting motions and other written submissions, including dispositive motions, pre-trial and post-trial briefing.  Madeline practices in state and federal court, as well as before arbitral panels. 

Madeline routinely assists energy companies and commodity traders to avoid disputes and mitigate risks by advising on proposed trading and shipping operations, with particular emphasis on unique Jones Act, Cargo Preference Act and US general maritime law issues. She has experience advocating for clients on matters involving the US Coast Guard, US Customs and Border Protection, and US Maritime Administration.

Madeline graduated from Tulane University Law School, one of the premier universities for admiralty and maritime law, where she received the Charles Kohlmeyer Jr. Award in Maritime Law.

  • Represented construction project owners in design and construction defect arbitration matters.
  • Represented owner and operator of hydrocarbon marine terminal facility in connection with tanker breakaway and allision matter.
  • Assisted foreign renewable project sponsor on compliance with the Cargo Preference Act of 1954 and engaged with the Maritime Administration to ensure sponsor's project logistics strategy was compliant with law. 
  • Assisted in representation of vessel classification society in connection with multiple USCG investigations into US Gulf Coast and Atlantic Coast investigations.
  • Advised numerous commodity traders and charterers on safe-berth and safe-port risks under US general maritime law.
  • Handled numerous charter party disputes, including demurrage, detention, and force majeure disputes.
  • Advised charterer on general average dispute in connection with vessel breakdown during Asia to US voyage.
  • Advised vessel owners, charterers, and traders on US maritime regulatory risks, including under the Jones Act and Cargo Preference Act of 1954.
  • Advised commodities traders and charterers on vessel blending and commingling operations under SOLAS.
  • Assisted in representation of US midstream energy company in a $400 million breach of contract litigation matter.
