Two Canadian partners named Lexpert Leading Lawyers Under 40

Canada Press release - Recognition November 2020

Partners Lara Mason (Calgary) and Mathieu Deschamps (Montréal) have been recognized as 2020 Lexpert Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40.

The prestigious award acknowledges the achievements of young practitioners like Deschamps and Mason, who balance fast-paced legal careers with family life and philanthropic commitments. Both are exceptional leaders in their respective practice areas, not only dedicated to delivering strategic and pragmatic advice to our clients, but also to mentoring the next generation of lawyers.

Mason is a sought-after commercial litigator whose practice focuses on class actions defence, regulatory matters in the electricity industry, and complex insurance coverage and defence mandates. Mason always puts her clients’ needs first and she offers creative approaches when needed.

Over her past 14 years at our firm, Mason has demonstrated a remarkable capacity to adapt to a variety of mandates, working on insurance claims arising from events such as natural disasters to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

When asked why he nominated Mason, Daniel Bennett, QC, chair of Norton Rose Fulbright’s Canadian litigation group, commented:

“Lara is very deserving of this recognition, in part because her clients are always a priority, and teamwork is one of her greatest strengths. She recognizes that true leadership is supporting others in their successes. Working closely with lawyers across practice groups in both Canada and the U.S., Lara is always trying to build diverse working teams that perform to a high standard.”

Deschamps has led the private M&A team in our Montréal office since 2017, advising businesses of all sizes on complex national and multinational transactions, while also supporting entrepreneurs. He is a key member of the client relationship teams that serve some of the largest corporations in Québec and Canada, and is appreciated for his business acumen and the practical solutions that he delivers time and time again.

A fervent supporter of diversity and inclusion initiatives, Deschamps has headed our Montréal office’s Pride Network since 2011, promoting inclusion both within our firm and the local business community.

Partner Eric Stevens, who works closely with Deschamps and nominated him for the award, commented:

“Mathieu can both lead, or seamlessly contribute to teams as the perfect team player, on any substantial transaction. He has a capacity to put to paper the most complex business concepts with his exceptional drafting skills. He makes it look easy. “

The Rising Star Award is peer reviewed and celebrates personal aspirations and contributions beyond the profession, such as volunteering, board membership, education and teaching. It also honours the determined, hardworking and well-rounded young professionals who are at the top of their field.

Deschamps and Mason will be listed as Lawyers to Watch in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory 2021, along with Maude Grenier, Ryan Keays and Bruce Sheiner
